The Human Life Amendment
What if you had never been born? What if, after an “unexpected” pregnancy, your mother had decided that the best way out of her situation was to kill you while you were still forming in her womb. What if one of your loved ones had never been born? What if, after an “unfortunate” relationship with a man, his or her mother had resolved to destroy the baby growing inside of her and so be done with the problem? What if the United States, land of liberty, home of the brave, country of new beginnings, were currently locked in the chains of such a practice? And what if there were a way out? Would you fight for it?
Abortion, to put it simply, is a term used to describe the currently legal murder of unborn babies. In a country dedicated to protecting the freedoms of its citizens, over 1.5 million of its most frail and helpless are heedlessly killed every year. Some have argued that it is a woman’s right to make her own choice concerning abortion. These “pro-choice” workers deny that unborn babies are people and so claim that they do not have the right to life guaranteed to others. Efforts are being made by pro-life Americans to give unborn babies rights and to make abortion illegal. However, they will continue to find progress slow until unborn babies are granted what many are calling “personhood”.
This year in Georgia, we have the unique and exciting opportunity to confirm the personhood of all unborn babies, regardless of what stage of development they are in. The “Paramount Right to Life” Amendment, proposed in March of this year, will drastically change the prospects of all unborn babies if passed. This amendment states that all innocent human beings have the right to life, which is the most basic and dominant of rights. It confirms that babies at all stages of development are persons and therefore, according to law, must be given this right. Passing this amendment will be a huge step toward regaining the complete sanctity of life our country has falsely boasted for the past thirty-four years since abortion was made legal.
As citizens of the United Sates, it is our duty to protect the innocent and defenseless. As U.S. Representative Lynn Westmoreland put it, “A respect for human life - from the moment of conception until natural death - lies at the heart of civilization. We should be judged as a society not by how we honor the mighty but by how we honor the meek.” Every individual baby, child, teen, man, and woman, was made with tender, loving care by our Creator. Every life is an individual masterpiece that should be revered with the highest regard. Personhood is a God-given thing. We cannot give it or take it away. We, the citizens of Georgia, can, however, help the meek make a comeback by supporting the Paramount Right to Life Amendment and showing the world what we believe.
